Knitting Blog » The Knitting Shop on BBC Radio 2
The Knitting Shop on BBC Radio 2

Yesterday morning we got a really exciting call from BBC Radio 2. They were going to discuss the lady who was seen knitting during the Murry match on Saturday night at Wimbledon and they wanted someone to come to the studio to talk about whether knitting was anti-social or not.

With that sort of topic how could we say no. Any avid knitter will know that knitting is anything but anti-social so it was great to have a chance to give a real knitters point of view.

It was a great day if a little terrifying and hopefully many of you listened in to hear us. The hardest part of the interview was they wanted me to knit throughout it, normally this would be no problem at all but I was so nervous that my hands would not stop shaking. I made sure I had something very simple to knit to make the whole thing easier.

I have to say that everyone at the BBC was really friendly which made it easier and great fun. Also while waiting to go on air I got to meet the band Kiss which was an added bonus and something I certainly did not expect to be doing when I woke up on Monday morning!

If you missed the show you can listen to it, for the next 6 days on BBC iplayer, We come on about 20 minutes from the end of the show:

I knit everywhere I go, I knit in doctors waiting rooms, hospitals, on the bus to and from work, and I think my marathon was as we went on holiday to scotland my hubby drove the motorhome and I knitted for the whole 300 miles. I knit dolls house items as well as standard sized knitting so always have something in my bag, I also needle and shuttle tat which creates quite a stir in waiting rooms. Well done for putting forward the cause for all of us knitters. I remember my grandmother sitting outside the front of the house with her neighbours all knitting away, and of course if you look up Dent Knitters they created a special needle to allow them to continue to knit while walking around the village and performing their household tasks.

Hi, Mercedes. Just caught up with your appearance on the radio. Every week, we take a lady out for a meal and I always take my knitting along. The people in the pub we go to say they've never seen anyone knitting there before but it doesn't worry them and some of the customers (male and female, young and older) have said lots of kind things about it. Our lady guest likes to see what I'm producing and doesn't mind at all that I knit and talk to her at the same time.

Well Like think you did very well and a great champion for the knitter. It sounded confident. When do we hear you next?

We had been discussing how snooty the newspapers were about this woman knitting at Wimbledon and making it sound as if she hadn't been able to concentrate on the match. It was good to hear the confident argument you put forward in favour of knitting and knitting in a public place. I was also amused by the free advertising considering that it was the BBC.

Hi this is Chris from Tuscany we dont have BBC iplayer here but we did see the lovely lady knitting. I cannot believe UK folk are so small-minded and petty to say that knitting whilst watching tennis, etc is anti-social. I wonder if it also applies to football?? Thank goodness I wasnt there as I might have taken my knitting loom! Keep calm and carry on knitting x

Hi Mercedes,

I heard the program and thought you came across really well - no nerves detected at all.

Being a relatively new knitter I only knit when I can give it 100% attention - no distractions:-)
